Spring 2018 Advice & ideas

Since Ron opened his first office in Watchung, NJ in 2006, Foley Prep has built a reputation for the highest quality tutoring and classes for teenagers and middle schoolers. Here's a sampling of recent developments and ideas to make the most of what's doing in our hubs.

Plan A: "Beat the AP Rush"

Take the FEBRUARY 10, 2018 SAT FOLLOWED BY the MARCH 10, 2018 SAT

This is the plan I recommend for students starting prep in December 2017 or early January 201 who seem to show a preference for the ACT. - Ron Foley

I believe that all students should prep hard for one test, but then be sure to take both tests, preferably one month apart. The February ACT and the March SAT presents a golden opportunity to do just that.

Compared to the SAT, most students feel that the ACT is a time crunch, but the questions are more straightforward. Since the SAT changed in March 2016, we at Foley Prep have observed that students are better off if they

1) prep for the ACT first, take an actual ACT, then

2) prep for and take an SAT.

Because much of the underlying content is the same, the adjustment from ACT prep to SAT prep involves less time. Most students who follow this path find the SAT easier than the ACT. Thus, these students are more likely to do better on both exams. So prep for the ACT, aka the "tougher test" time-wise but not trickiness-wise, then apply these test-taking skills to the SAT. It's a one-two punch. I am not suggesting prepping massively for both tests. Since ACT prep goes a long way to prep for the SAT also, after taking the February 10th SAT, take a month to prep for the SAT. By doing this, you are capitalizing on all the effort you have made and it should take half the amount of prep time - or less - to hit your high mark on the SAT.

This plan is ideal for students who are facing a heavier load during AP testing time in May. While the April ACT is traditionally the biggest test date of the year for ACT, it's nice to take a chance at the February test - results will be returned in time to sign up for the April test, so you can do 2 ACTs before AP exam time!

Note: we recommend that students take a minimum of 10 classes or private tutoring sessions plus 2-3 practice exams before taking an actual SAT or ACT. After the first test, prep time varies between any SAT or ACT.

Plan B: "The Traditional Route"

Take the MARCH 10, 2018 SAT FOLLOWED BY the APRIL 14, 2018 ACT

This is the traditional route that most kids have gone down over the years. Again, students should prep for hard one test, take it, then prep some for the other test and take it. While I stand by Plan A  as the preferred path because prepping hard for the ACT first seems to help kids do better on both, doing it the other way around (prep SAT first then prep ACT) is okay too. April 14th is a little close to AP exam time so some of the more advanced students may feel better off had they gone with Plan A and tried the ACT first.

Bottom line: sometimes being overly strategic adds unnecessary stress, so go ahead and make a plan and be ready to adjust along the way. Getting familiar with both tests is not the hardest thing in the world, and I've seen students do better because they get to compare and contrast the tests as they move along in their prep.

Foley Prep SAT and ACT classes and tutoring will help all students, of course. Many students who start in the mid-20's range ACT and the mid 1200's range SAT go up 6-7+ and 220+ points respectively. It takes work and focus, but we have seen kids get National Merit scholarships who never thought they ever had a shot.
